History
A piece of history
Camping de Meulinge is run by the Vermeulen family, primarily Sasja, Emmy, and Marleen. Marleen is the aunt of Sasja and Emmy, and Monique, the mother of Sasja and Emmy, as well as Marleen’s sister, Mirjam, can also be found at the reception. It’s a true family business.
The recreation industry runs in our blood, as we all have a background in the family business Camping de Pekelinge. Marleen’s parents (and consequently Sasja and Emmy’s grandparents) started their life adventure in 1983. They moved from Brabant to Oostkapelle and transformed an old farmhouse into a campsite: Camping de Pekelinge. The (grand)parents laid the foundation, but their children, Twan and Mirjam, along with their partners, developed de Pekelinge into one of the leading recreation companies in Zeeland. However, as de Pekelinge became increasingly professional, large-scale, and successful, the pressure to organize everything well became overwhelming. So, everyone in the family accepted the decision to sell de Pekelinge in 2020.
Meanwhile, Marleen (the youngest of the family) had already started her own campsite in Zeeuws Vlaanderen in 2006, then called Camping International. Initially, she ran it together with her partner at the time, who left in 2011. From 2011 to 2023, Marleen ran the campsite on her own, which occasionally caused stress and a high workload. Since 1 January 2024, Marleen has been receiving help and her nieces Sasja and Emmy have been actively involved in the family business.
Innovations at the campsite
In the winter of 2024/2025, several renovation projects were completed:
- The main building was completely renovated. Essentially, the walls and thatched roof were retained, but everything else was rebuilt. The main building now houses not only the reception but also the bakery section and the laundry.
- At our play farm, a glass conservatory was built, allowing you to enjoy the terrace atmosphere indoors even on rainy days.
- Pierewiet’s kitchen was set up for large-scale pancake preparation. Since 2025, you can enjoy pancakes in addition to delicious fries and burgers from the menu.
- A brand-new water playground was constructed in front of Pierewiet’s terrace. You can now easily watch your little ones splashing around from the terrace.
- Most of the pitches near the playground have been equipped with a new sanitary building.
Looking to the future
Together, we have plans to take the quality of Camping de Meulinge to an even higher level.
As you can see above, we carried out many renovations in the winter of 2024/2025. This winter, our focus is mainly on greening the campsite and renewing the electricity network and water pipes, so everything is ready for the future.
In the long term, we also want to give the campsite entrance a fresh, new look.
